Mobile Devices A Generation Away From Useful
Jakob Nielsen's current column, Mobile Devices: One Generation From Useful, comments on usability issues of the Sidekick, which he owns. He's pretty kind to the product and obviously likes its potential.

I agree with Jakob that Danger's next generation device will be sweet if some of the major issues are addressed such as wider cellular network coverage and integration with desktop productivity apps.

Jakob also calls for the rethinking of the delivery of e-mail and web page content for mobile devices. He states that e-mail on mobile devices should be better filtered so that you don't get too little or too much e-mail. While Internet-enabled mobile devices are not pervasive yet, they will be, and there's not much mobile device-specifc content today. This will be a huge area of opportunity for web designers and developers.

Since generations of new mobile devices pass in less than a year, I'm hoping the next Sidekick will be announced as soon as winter (I hope, I hope).
