After four years with my Powerbook G3, I diverted some freelance money to buy a Powerbook G4 Titanium today from the local Apple Store. For about the same money as the G3, I have four times the ram and disk space, and a quantum leap in processing power. So far, my only complaint is a single dead pixel in the screen. For next week in New York, I'll leave my chunky Dell 8100 at home and surf in style via the Airport card on the hotel's WiFi network.

I just spent about 40 minutes wandering around the Jersey City waterfront making time exposures of the skyline (with my Coolpix!). I wanted to blog something from the scene, but the Sidekick camera just doesn't work at night.

Looking for a subject to shoot close up, I decided to light some details of the Jersey City 9-11 Memorial with my LED flashlight. The memorial consists of several pieces of I-beam from the towers and a black granite monolith with the names of Jersey City citizens who died on that day.

The bright white light on torn metal gave me an eerie sense of what it must have felt like to be one of the rescuers digging through the rubble. But minus the toxic fumes and dust.

I faded the audio of the Diana Krall Live from Paris DVD to realize that her smoky voice had carried me most of the way home on the train. Latent images of the concert blend into the familiar Penn Station. Home in Baltimore.

They take our cardboard boxes tomorrow at noon, and the computers at 3. We report to the 7th floor of 90 Hudson in Jersey City Monday morning. Chaos is inevitable ... it's just a question of how much.

Oh well, it's New York, so there's a ton of stuff to see around here. I sat and had the linguine pesto and the peach cobbler. Of course the bartender asked about the Sidekick. He's an ex-dotcommer. By the time I was done eating, it was mostly women in the place. No surprise since the Victoria's Secret Special is on, and they probably gave up on their spouse or s.o.

Four meteors and lots of fish

I just got back to the hotel from Peck Slip in Manhattan, which overlooks the East River and Brooklyn skyline. It was a chilly 39 degrees.

In 40 minutes, I saw four bright meteors. I had my Nikon Coolpix 995 perched on a railing to take eight second exposures. I think I may have snagged one trail in the 50-odd images I made.

Viewing conditions were textbook bad with city lights, a full moon on the other side of the horizon and high, thin clouds. That I saw any meteors at all means the show must have been spectacular out in the countryside.

Walking back to the hotel, I dodged forklifts zipping by the loading bays of Fulton Fish Market. Hundreds of workers--too busy to think about meteors-- were loading up trucks and vans with today's catch.

I'm here at Karen's place with a great bunch of local NYC information architects talking about the future of the profession, but now the night has devolved into a gadget show and tell. I can take the blame for that because I pulled my Sidekick out.

Well I was all set to post these pictures yesterday just before Jessica and Jay's wedding ceremony, but DOH! My Sidekick battery died because I forgot to charge it the night before.

The photos are of the bride and bridesmaids, the photographer posing a group, my friend and co-worker Jenny Hayes, and Jay and Jessica.

The ceremony was at the beautiful Emma Willard School chapel in Troy, NY. The reception at Crooked Lake was wonderful too, and some pix will be up on curiouslee soon.

Now back on the train to Manhattan...
