One of the managers in our group works in Delaware a few days a week, and he said he didn't mind me sitting at his desk with my laptop once in a while for a change in scenery. And what a change indeed to have a panoramic view of the New York City skyline. Having WiFi access would be the icing on the cake, but my Sidekick is a fine second choice.

We just got out of a three-hour suspension of disbelief called The Two Towers. Trees rule!

While many thought the film was long or slow or both, I see the film as truly the middle installment of what will become a powerful and cohesive cinematic trilogy. Maybe George Lucas will change his mind and let Peter Jackson direct a third trilogy of Star Wars using the same approach of three films shot all at once and released a year apart.

If you haven't already, watch the Appendix disks of the new boxed DVD set of The Fellowship of the Ring to get an idea of the amazing techniques and technology behind the films.

I stopped to take some pictures in the decorated courtyard of the nursing home where my 100 year old grandmother is living. Some steady snow flurries are giving the outdoors a pretty white coating without sticking to the roads. Inside the home, grandma is as alert and cranky as ever. Taking pictures calms me.

I'm at the Plans in Progress exhibit at The World Financial Center to see the models and drawings of the nine design proposals for rebuilding Ground Zero. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation selected these finalists from 406 submissions from around the world. Since the proposals were just released, the displays are pretty mobbed so I will definitely come back one night after work to spend some time with each of the designs. The web site has an extensive amount of content which I surfed last night.

Upstairs from the design proposals, American Express has staged "Rewarding Lives," an exhibit of portraits by Annie Leibovitz. Since the show closes Dec. 31st, I'm going to dive into the line and metal detectors to have a look.

... in the dark. Walking past the food places near my hotel, I quickly came upon Ground Zero at the corner of Church and Liberty. There's one security guy pacing back and forth trying to keep warm, and a couple cops sitting in police pickups.

A Christmas tree has been set up in front of the iron cross. Behind the tree is just a big hole in the ground which might one day be filled with one of the nine design proposals that were released today.

Random people are walking by to take in the scene. In just 10 minutes, about 40 people have come by. Even at this wee hour, people want to remember.

Oy, my hands are numb. Heading back to the hotel now.

I just got off the Acela Train at Penn Station New York. Camera crews from Fox and Channel 7 are here covering the scene as the city approaches the possible 12:01am strike. If the strike goes, the city and its economy will be paralyzed with potential losses of $100 - 300 million a day. One thing I didn't realize is that restaurants and other service business won't be getting deliveries. Tomorrow could be a mess. I'm not much affected because I take the ferry, but the insurance campany where I'm consulting, AIG has a massive contingency plan in place.
