Dent ... Doh!

this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayThere's a dent on the lid of my Powerbook now and I'm really lucky (like $900 lucky) my screen didn't crack. I had the computer in a fitted Incase sleeve and it was the AC adapter stored in the neoprene side pocket that left the dent when I bumped it on a door. Tekserve in NYC wants somewhere over $150 to replace the piece which I'm inclined to do since I'm concerned that the dent will put pressure on back of the screen. The other choice is to cover the spot with a fun sticker and not worry about it. Anyway, a lesson was learned.

NYC - Fire Stalls Commute At Penn Station

Someone at the office spread the word about the fire under the LIRR platform which caused an evacuation of Penn Station and a complete shutdown of the LIRR by 4pm. I decided to take the ferry over anyway as there was no specific news on Amtrak. The area around and in the station was totally mobbed. When I got to the Amtrak concourse, I saw a discouraging column of

DELAYED DELAYED DELAYED DELAYED DELAYED

on the status board. But after a few minutes, they called for boarding of my train! Oh Happy Valentine's Day! I'm going home after all.

It was great to see such a diverse array of people who share a common passion for writing and blogging.

We're in a focus group testing facility today getting impressions from real users of a large corporate web site. Carefully screened participants work with a facilitator/interviewer while our group observes from behind a one-way mirror in an adjacent soundproofed room. The video from the computer screen is combined with a small inset view of the participant's facial reactions as they use the site. There's no better way to understand usability problems in your web site interfaces than to watch frustrated users.

After Chinese New Year brunch with my mom, we stopped by The NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. I gave tours of the facilities on weekends for seven years in the 80s. Though it's a very low-profile operation, Goddard is the global control hub of voice and data communications during manned and unmanned space missions. The visitor's area was understandably closed today, so I made some images at the main entrance.

May we honor the memory of the brave explorers we just lost by supporting NASA's ongoing mission.

Forget war, go explore!
