| Apple table on the train Sun 04.06.03 5:43pm PDT #4033 |
In the dozens of Amtrak train rides I've taken in the last few months, this is the first time I've sat with two other Apple PowerBook users. Usually, I'm the only PowerBook user in sight. I'm sitting in the cafe car of the northbound 158 to New York City and the train is standing room only. The lady in front of me, who just got on in Philadelphia, has a brand new 12" PowerBook. If this convergence of people who "Think Different" happens again, I might actually believe significant numbers are making the switch. - mike lee - |

![]() ![]() ![]() After months of commuting in various directions by train, tonight was the first time my wife arrived at Baltimore Penn Station from Washington, DC just in time to see me off to New York City. There ought to be a specially-priced ticket for couples who commute between three major cities. - mike lee - new york and baltimore - curiouslee.com |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's so quiet here at Penn Station Baltimore. Virtually no one around. My ears are still ringing from New York. It feels good to breathe Baltimore air after two weeks of travel. - mike lee - new york and baltimore - curiouslee.com |
| Meeting the work of a master Fri 03.28.03 7:23pm PST #3853 |
![]() ![]() ![]() I got through about two thirds of the Leonardo show before they closed the gallery. It was a privilege to soak in the breadth and brilliance of his drawings and paintings. My nose hovered in the space above paper where the Master's fingers stroked details small and large over 400 years ago. Most people engaged the artwork up close or with magnifying glasses, but I reveled in the oblique perspective where Da Vinci's drawing process could be seen. In the dim gallery light, I saw sketch stylus marks, compass needle holes, scuffs, and the rich textures of the paints and paper. This was a surface dimension that's impossible to perceive in book reproductions. I applaud the show organizers who worked 10 years to convince various owners to release these delicate pieces to American light. - mike lee - new york and baltimore - curiouslee.com |
| The Line for Leonardo Fri 03.28.03 4:19pm PST #3848 |
The jagged white line under the arch is made of the silhouettes of just a few of the people that are in the 90 minute line to see the Leonardo show. I hope I make it in. A Met staffer just handed me a legal-sized flyer with the same text that was on the web site. Good thing I can surf on my Sidekick. - mike lee - new york and baltimore - curiouslee.com |

![]() ![]() I'm a sucker for impulse purchases at the cash regsiter--especially toys. A couple shiny things caught my eye at the Powell's Bookstore stall at the airport just now. The first is an Acrobot posable metal figure. It's made of wire terminal pieces riveted together and attached to a clear plastic bead head. I got one for Amy and another to keep on my computer monitor at work. The stick figure reminds me of the actor symbol in use case diagrams, but these are more fun. The second shiny were in a jar labeled "Mystery Capsules - Write a secret message - roll your own." It's a pill-sized machined aluminum capsule that unscrews to reveal a fortune-cookie-sized paper scroll. I bought a couple dozen to use as conntainers for special micro-business cards. The capsules are made by Tops Malibu and are even patented (#4,696,640). OK, time to board the plane to Chicago. - mike lee - portland international airport - |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My wife and I are having a spirit-cleansing walk through The Portland Classical Chinese Garden Lan Su Yuan Garden of Awakening Orchids. It's cloudy and cool, and everything is covered with droplets of rainwater--a place for perfect picturetaking. |
| Sick of red stripes Thu 03.20.03 3:57pm PST #3718 |
I'm here at Dulles on the second leg of my tour of airport TGI Fridays. Flights were delayed out of Newark and elsewhere this morning because of the snow storm that dumped 3 feet+ snow on Denver yesterday. After four hours here in Virginia, I should finally be able to board a plane to Portland, OR where I'll be attending the Information Architecture Summit this weekend. - mike lee - |
