| Great Space: The Hayden Planetarium Wed 08.06.03 9:59am PDT #5731 |

The 87 foot diameter sphere of the Hayden Planetarium is an awe inspiring sight. A model of the Solar System hovers around the top of the sphere, which is boxed-in by a glass-covered metal structure. The base of the sphere is surrounded by a spiral walkway along which you can learn about the scale of the Universe. Inside, the space show I saw today was Harrison Ford narrating "The Search for Life in the Universe." I was a little disappointed that they didn't use the star projector. - mike lee - new york city |
| Yan Wed 08.06.03 6:15am PDT #5730 |
Yesterday, just before my evening meeting in Brooklyn, I was hoping to a do a photoshoot with Yan on a pier on the Jersey City waterfront. The Manhattan skyline makes an incredible backdrop. Of course, just as we met in the lobby of her office, a rain squall rolled overhead and held steady. So as a fallback, we went into a conference room to make some portraits. Despite sub-optimal shooting circumstances, I'm happy with some of the images. Truthfully, Yan looks great in any light on any backdrop. I'll post a few samples from the session on the main blog after I do some editing and color-correction. Today, I'm off to the Hayden Planetarium and B&H Photo, then back on a train to Baltimore. - mike lee - P.S. I'm trying hard to catch up with Keithwj on model shoots! |
| A gathering of friends of information architecture Tue 08.05.03 6:04pm PDT #5726 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tonight's my first night in a few months at Victor's Information Architecture Salon. We have a record turnout of 16 people here at Carolyn's apartment. Everyone schmoozed for a while over snacks and drinks and then our guest speaker started her presentation. Kathryn Brown, Director of Information Strategy at Columbia University Digital Knowledge Ventures, is the guest speaker on applying topic maps to a database of academic discourse. This is pretty cutting edge stuff, especially for those who are working in the library science discipline. - mike lee - in steamy brooklyn, new york |

I have a few extra minutes this morning before I head to the train station, so I'm testing out a simultaneous moblog post to my Hiptop Nation blog and my new TypePad. Crossing my thumbs ... - mike lee - baltimore - curiouslee |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have my PowerBook slaved to my iMac tonight in our home office to backup a heap of data onto several DVDs. I'm suddenly struck by the pagan-ish symbols on mysteriously-lit forms; it's a downright cultish scene ... wait, this is a cult. Never mind. - mike lee - |
| Insanely cool cutting Fri 08.01.03 1:13pm PDT #5649 |
![]() ![]() ![]() Adam is showing me his new VersaLASER 30 watt, computer-driven desktop laser cutter. The machine takes EPS line art from programs like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw to cut extremely intricate shapes in paper, fabric, leather, foam board, acrylic plastic, wood and rubber. It can do engraving on a host of other materials. He uses the machine to manufacture signage for the home theater industry. I'm invited back to play more ... my brain feels faint from all the creative possibilities. - mike lee - baltimore |
