| Visiting Princeton Sat 09.13.03 6:36pm PDT #6287 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After the salon at Anna's, Amy and I took the short ride to Princeton University. I had been nearby three years ago on a consulting gig, but didn't get to walk around. We parked on Nassau Street and took a walk a short distance into the beautiful university campus. The light was fading fast and the humidity felt like 110% so we went back to the main drag to find dinner. We must make a trip back one day soon to see this charming campus in daylight. Dinner was comforting diner food at the Annex [subterrainian] Restaurant & Bar. Now were cruising south on 295 on our way home. - mike lee - |
| Friends of information architecture barbeque too Sat 09.13.03 5:54pm PDT #6286 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some of the monthly salon gang converged on Anna's house in Princeton, NJ for an afternoon barbeque. Present were Victor, Liz, Karen, Tanya, James, Amy, and Anders. Over hot dogs, salad, snacks, and wine, we each talked about an object we carry in our pocket or purse that we think is well designed. Cell phones, wallets, paper notebooks and a Swiss Army Knife were presented. Natch, the Color Sidekick was requested for a demo. I would have blogged in real time, but didn't have a signal. The rest of the conversation was broad and stimulating as usual, and we marked the end of the afternoon with most everyone getting a ride to the Princeton Junction train station to return to New York City. A hearty thank you goes to Anna for hosting. - mike lee - |

![]() ![]() ![]() Ken, while you can talk about the aniversary gift for your wife here because she doesn't read this site, I can use it in the reverse. My wife does read this site from her desktop at work and via her Sidekick to keep up on my lazy ass. See honey: I did make it to the city dump today! - mike lee - baltimore |
| The Pipeman Family Thu 09.11.03 2:11pm PDT #6251 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When you enter Sirkis Hardware on Falls Road in Hampden area of Baltimore you can't help but notice the pipe people figures in the window. Made by the young son of the former owner of the shop over 40 years ago, the original Pipeman became a bit of a celebrity a few years ago. A local illustrator named Dave Plunkert used a photo of Pipeman as the primary subject in his submission to a poster contest in 1997. The poster won, and actually became part of the permanent collection of the Library of Congress a year later. Store staffer Carle Klupt, shown here lighting the pipe people for me, has created Pipe Woman and even Pipe Baby! - mike lee - baltimore |

| Changing of a flag that was still there Wed 09.10.03 2:08pm PDT #6236 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It seems kind of fitting to visit the changing of the flag at Fort McHenry on the eve of the second anniversary of 9/11. The fort reminds of an era when war was simple and the country could be defended from behind some little mounds of earth. It was unthinkable then that war could one day consume the entire planet. - mike lee - baltimore |
