This is the beginning of tonight's lunar eclipse as seen through my Sharper Image binoculars from under the flag in front of AARP Headquarters. Now I'm posting from a moving taxi. I love mobile technology!

Storyteller and information designer Thom Haller was in the office this morning to deliver an inspirational session on how, as individuals, our web team can prepare for, and contribute positively to, organizational change. Thom started by interviewing the team to create an informal timeline of the web group from its inception in 1995 to today and beyond. Then he introduced the ideas from a delightful little pop-up book titled Creativity - The Flowering Tornado by Seattle glass artist Ginny Ruffner. Her site has photos of the intricately-engineered book spreads. The central messages in the book are a Roadmap to Creative Action that consists of the following ideas that can be applied to any life endeavor:
  • Don't get tied up in the small stuff
  • Avoid self judgment
  • Be aware of beauty
  • Avoid the trap of fear
  • Have courage with your imagination
  • Put your will into action
To make the point about not sweating the small stuff, Thom had everyone write down on Post-ITs examples of small things that each felt they spent too much time worrying about. Then he collected everyone's notes, and without reviewing them, balled them up and stuffed them into a cup. The cup was stapled to the middle of the timeline as a symbolic break from an aspect of the past. Thom kept our team engaged in exercises and dialog like this for two more hours and I think all agree the session was a success. We're looking forward to part 2 in a few weeks.

We thought Baby Cianna was doing so well at learning to talk, but now based on this covertly-obtained phonecam image, we suspect she's... WIRED!

We just stopped near the Natty Boh Building in east Baltimore to photograph the giant "head' sign for a project I'm working on with Keri. I noticed that there's neon in the sign, so I'll have to come back at twilight to capture that--or maybe I can fake it in Photoshop. This building was once the National Bohemian brewery and is now being converted into condos. Naturally, I went into a corner bar to pick up a six of the classic beer.

Donna's Coffee Unwired
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayThe waitress at our neighborhood Donna's Coffee Bar and Restaurant said that the wifi here has been up and running for a month. This the first publically-promoted free WiFi that I know of near our house and a welcome arrival given that the nearby Cosi and Kinkos charge for access.

I'm in a taxi heading to DC from BWI. It's a grey rainy day, so I was glad I got to see some sun and blue sky at 28,000 feet on my way in from Boston. I just ran into my old boss Syd at the airport and took 15 minutes to grab a coffee with him to catch up. We hadn't talked since I went to work at AARP last year. I gave him some of the slick MIT Media Lab literature that features my photos, and he told me all about his new business designing custom private golf courses and selling synthetic turf. Then he was off to catch a flight to Chicago, and me to a taxi. Now that I'm in flying out of town regularly, I've run into old co-workers and clients several times in the terminal, which is one of the few good things about being in an airport.

We're all at Royal East Chinese Restaurant for dinner. Walter is starting off with a recap of the day's discussions. The other presenters are doing quick stand-up summaries too.

Dr. Cynthia Breazeal is conducting an experiment in verbal task coordination where Philip from Motorola (pic 3 right), who is sitting behind a cardboard wall, is describing to Peter of Time, Inc. (pic 3 left) how to build the shape of a horse using tangram puzzle pieces. The existence of a physical barrier in this case significantly affects the learning process. Cynthia brings humans' social process of learning to the domain of artificial intelligence and robots.
