Hackable LED Flash Unit?
Now that the SKII has a simple LED flash that emits a pulse of light during the integrated camera's exposure, it may be possible to have that burst of light trigger an external flash unit. It would be handy to have a small pocketable add-on LED flash like the MPF-10 pictured above for camera-enabled Sony Ericsson phones. Expansys currently sells the accessory for $16.95. A little Googling reveals that this little LED flash might be a Luxeon device powered by a Maxim MAX1583 White LED Camera-Flash Boost Converter chip. The MPF-10 would need to draw power from batteries or the USB port. A photo-detector and optoisolator circuit could sense the light pulse and close a circuit to trigger the LED flash, or even cooler, trip any off-the-shelf photo flash unit small or large. I'm throwing this info out to the Lazyweb for those with some EE skills and some extra time.

Also, take a look at this illustrated discussion on LED vs. Xenon Flash for camera phones.

I should have mentioned in my last post that the glass lens magnifier I'm using does 15x magnification. Edmund Scientific sells similar triplet maginifers in 7X, 10X or 20X for $38.95 - $42.95. They also sell a $5 folding plastic magnifier that does 4X, 6X and 10X.

Illustrating this post are close-up shots of 1) a touchtone phone button 2) RJ-45 ethernet connector 3) Jackson's eyes from a $20 bill 4) the hologram from a Visa card and 5) my wife's left eye.

Ed, Kale and other piercers out there: you can document your jewelry in extreme detail!

Maxim-ized
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayHere's a slight twist in my photo adventures: Trisha, who I did a test session with last October, submitted some of the resulting photos to Maxim's Hometown Hotties 2004 Contest. She didn't make the semi-finals (25,000 photos were submitted), but she's showcased on the web site in a Hottie Bio! It's also cool to know that her husband is using one of the bikini shots as his desktop wallpaper.

Um, I think I'll have to set up another photo session with her soon...

After hanging out in an extra bedroom above the baby's room and reading for a while, I think I'm ready to crash.
