| Salt water chlorinator installed! Sat 07.23.05 5:26pm PDT #14622 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For those who don't know, this gizmo plus about 360# of salt in the pool equals chlorine generated by electrolysis. I think this is the fastest install I've ever done. Only went to the hardware store once to buy two bushings and 400# of salt. 360# brings the salt level to 3200 PPM, which is below the level of taste, and in the "sweet spot" for the generator. The nice thing is that it makes chlorine any time the pump is on, lessening my maintenance chores considerably. The only thing that happens is that I have to add more muriatic acid to counteract the small amount of NaOH produced, but It's well worth the tradeoff! Michael |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Shelly picked up some of Wolfgang Puck's coffee in a self heating can on clearance. Pretty cool how it works. First you flip the can over, pull the ring and reveal a plastic dome filled with blue water. Push the dome down with your thumb, wait 5 seconds, flip the can over. Wait for the pink "hot spot" to turn white indicating the coffee is hot. Spin the plastic ring on to to align with the pop tab. Shake 10 seconds to make it all frothy like. Pop the tab and spray coffee on pants. Drink and enjoy! Michael |

| Router antenna hack Sun 07.17.05 2:29pm PDT #14520 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In an effort to get stronger signal to the upstairs computer, I did this quickie little hack to the antennas on my router. I first saw it on www.hackaday.com, and the plans are on www.freeantennas.com. I used a manilla folder for the reflectors and foam-cor board for the reflector form. I cut the folder up into squares, sprayed it with spray adhesive and put a sheet of aluminum foil on each. I rolled it on with a print roller...it turned out surprisingly smooth! I got out the lo-temp hot glue gun (which is important so you don't melt the foam part of the foam board) and glued the reflector on to the form. It forms a surprisingly sturdy bond. Results? I went from barely holding 1 bar to holding 3-4 bars. Michael |
| New Dishwasher Sun 07.17.05 10:03am PDT #14517 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Replaced the old dishwasher with a new model, an Ariston. Stainless steel in and out, and has a built in water softener, which is very cool because it eliminates water spots along with needing less soap. It also has an energy star rating, and it uses almost the least amount of energy in its class. The tag says the energy costs are $23/year to run it. Pretty impressive, and it looks sexy too!
