A walk in the woods Sat 02.21.04 10:26am PST #8263 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We took a walk through the woods on some of the trails in the park. Saw some interesting stuff. The first 3 pix are of the trail. It's really a beautiful day out. Clear blue sky, cool, with a light breeze. The next picture of the stick shows how a squirrel (I think) has gnawed off the tasty green bark, much like you or I would do to a corn cob. I'm not sure if the camera picked up the gnaw marks though! Next is an example of a wild onion that seems to grow everywhere here. The stems are not hollow like onions, but smell the same. Upon cutting the root ball I found that the smell is really quite mild. I'm thinking that they may be more like a scallion, as the smell is a pleasant combination of onion and garlic. When the sun hits them in the morning, you can really smell it on the breeze. Next up is a dewberry patch. These are like a blackberry/raspberry. The vines are filled with thorns, so you have to be careful when picking them. However, they are out of season, so no snacks for us! The grass-like stuff you see in the next picture are the wild onions growing. Finally, the trail leads us to the edge of the Brazos river. Like most rivers here in Texas, it is a muddy mess. Got to have a pic of Shelly and I, so here we are with the river in the background. Found some interesting prints in the mud. Not sure what the big one is, but it's not a raccoon. We do have bobcats and cougars here, but I don't think this is one of them. The second print looks like a wild hog. The remaining few shots are the walk back to the RV, with the last one being a vertical. If it looks vertically squished, click on it to see the actual picture. Michael (wireless) IM: mwsmith70 |
a few shots from around the campsite Sat 02.21.04 8:44am PST #8261 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the thrid time we've been here in the past few weeks, so it's getting harder to take pictures that are something different than I've already taken. One thing that is pretty cool about this park are the firepits. The firering and grill are integrated, so you can build a big fire, then kick the coals over for cooking. However, I've never done that, and with it getting as hot as it usually is here, I doubt that I ever will. The fire that is burning is leftover from last night. I scattered the logs so they wouldn't burn out...I was able to pile 'em up again so I could have a nice little fire for my wife and I this morning. There are some oddly shaped trees here, so here is an example. The site was pretty unlevel, so I had to use my fancy-pants interlocking levelers for everything to work right. This is the first time ever I've had to use 2 layers, so this site is pretty far off. The last couple of shots are our general campground area and a view from inside my rig. It may not be the pretiest spot to camp, but with it being 30 minutes away from home, it sure is convienient! Michael (wireless) IM: mwsmith70 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are a few shots of my woodpiles. I've managed to burn off quite a bit this year, but I've still got lots left. Not pictured is the woodpile in my RV storage place, which is a pretty good size too and is all oak. I've got plenty of room in the Excursion to haul all of this stuff, so I can put a pretty good pile inside. I took a shot of my lantern before, but it was on, making it pretty hard to see. I'm holding it this time with it off so you can see it and get a sense of scale. Ok! Everything is packed, incliding my 6' ladder which I use to clean off the slideout on the trailer. Temp is a balmy 72, and I'm ready to go! Michael (wireless) IM: mwsmith70 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My sweetheart of a wife bought me this lantern for Valentine's day. It's the one I've been drooling over. I fire it up, and it works great. I then go read the instructions that came with it, and was amazed to find the typo that you see pictured above. The lantern is a DUAL fuel (as in using two types.) The instruction pamphlet shows a DUEL fuel (as in "pull your gat, I challenge you to a duel!") You'd think that SOMEONE at Coleman would have caught it. Either that or maybe they just thought it was "close enough" and that "people would get the idea." Either that or there are some HOLLAS working in the techincal writing department at Coleman. ;) Michael (wireless) IM: mwsmith70 |
