Checked out Ultraviolet tonight and as much as I wanted to like this movie I just couldn't. It's written & directed by Kurt Wimmer who also did Equilibrium, one of my favorite "sci-fi" films. It's supposedly a very loose remake of 'Gloria'. The films back story involves a genetically engineered plague set loose on the world and a race of hyperfast, hyperstrong vampires dubbed "Hemophages". The fear of the virus has the turned world into paranoid society run by fascist government named the Arch-Ministry. The government has the developed the ultimate weapon to defeat the Hemophages in a 10 year-old boy.

The only thing stopping the extermination of the Hemophages is, Violet. A recent recruit to the Hemophage cause who uses her brutal skills to prevent the vampiress from being killed. Back when she was human, Violet was pregnant, but lost the child. Her personal malpractice mission means finding the humans responsible before they can wipe her & her kind off the planet.

The rest of the film is a 90 minute music video combined with the graphics of a video game all matched up with pulse pounding techno beat.

If you've seen Equilibrium, then you know there were some ultra cool fight scenes, especially the final battle. The ones in this film, however, are lackluster which is disappointing, since the entire movie is one fight scene after another.

Went down to RPI's iEAR to see Tiffany Holmes and her new project "Your Face Is Safe with Me". It's an animation generated in real time using live feed from a closed circuit television network (CCTV) located in the Arts Department of RPI's West Hall. The animation is a humorous yet critical commentary on the increasing number of surveillance cameras in urban & suburban spaces. The large projection portrays the computer playing simple videogames with itself for no purpose.

The games parodied refer to the proliferation of surveillance camera networks & their potential to be perceived as hostile intruders in community spaces, as envisioned in the updated Space Invaders game. In another videogame, Pacman chomps through a single CCTV screenshot to reveal several others, alluding to our culture's voracious appetite for covert imagery. And when Asteroids played, a tiny ship blasting surveillance camera images into ever smaller ones, convey the immense amount of banal imagery generated daily by CCTV networks.

After watching the exhibit for about 30 minutes, Ms. Holmes gave a discussion about the project, how it started along with spin off / side project Open Loop. Additionally, she talked about some of her previous works including Nosce Te Ipsum & Open Body.

While doing a quick mall crawl, I walked by a CVS who had a Coca-Cola representative on hand passing out free cups of Vault and Vault Zero (Diet).

Guy was doing his best to do the entire sales pitch, "It's the world's first hybrid energy soda. It's a mix of soda & energy drink, and has 70.5MG of caffine per 12OZ serving. Mt. Dew only has 55."

I grabbed a free cup, and noticed right away it tasted different from the last bottle I had, it was kinda flat tasting. Apparently a few people aggreed with me because they left their cups in a tree planter.

When I came out to goto breakfast I noticed I had left a bottle of Code Red on the front seat last night, which was a pretty stupid thing to do considering the temperature was dropping to the single digits.

Luck was on my side because it just missed popping and leaking everwhere. Now I have a Mt Dew slushie to wash down my ham & eggs.

Mother Nature is kicking some ass up here in NY today, so much so that she caused a few of the water bricks to take an early dip into the shallow end of the pool. Once that happened, it was pretty much over for the rest of the cover. With the winds gusting up to 35 mph, it allowed for the jumbo tarp to flap around, which opened the door for pool water got on top of the cover and dragged everything closer to the very edge.

The good news is that I had tossed the pump to remove most of the water a week ago, if I hadn't I am almost positive the entire cover with out been in the drink.

$320 Bottle Of Soda
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayOn my recent trip to Nashville, I managed to grab a few bottles of Vault. Its Coca-Cola's newest entry in the citrus flavored soda market. Their first was a little ditty called Surge, which was designed to replace Coke's faltering Mello Yello brand and to compete with Pepsi's Mountain Dew.

Its tag line is ... "Drinks like a soda, kicks like an energy drink!" Which sounds a hell of a lot like Mt. Dew's newest spinoff MDX.

From what I remember of Surge, Vault does taste very similar. For me it will never replace the Mt. Dew family of drinks, but on $0.78 a bottle I can at least have a few sips.

For all you Coke fans out there who've had their fill of Citra, Sundrop, Wink, & Squirt, go give this stuff a try. It's supposed to launch nationally sometime in late February or early March.

The arcade picked up an UltraCade Street Fighter Anniversary Edition machine. It has every SF game that ran on the Capcom Play System 2 (CPS2) from The World Warrior all the way up to Alpha 3.

I played a few games as Guile on Turbo Hyper Fighting, DeeJay on Super Turbo, and Charlie on the Alpha's. Over all the emulation was pretty decent, I did notice some minor slow down in Super Turbo and the Alpha series, especially when there was alot of action on the screen.

As I rolled up on my driveway at 2:30AM, after getting out of a mignight screening of Oldboy at the Spectrum 8, there was 4 police cars, an ambulance, and a tow truck in front of the house.

From what I can tell, someone lost control of their Sunbird at about the middle point of my left neighbor's yard (1), crossed over the top of my driveway (2), went airborn for a few feet & landed hard in my yard. From there the car continued over the other part of the driveway (4), skipped over a small patch of yard between my house and my right neighbor's driveway, finally coming to rest in their yard.

The car took down three small trees before it came to rest somewhere in pile of branches (5). My neighbor told me afterwards that the driver was drunk and tried to drive the car up the other side of his yard, only to fail multiple times.
